BUXUS (Boxwood) 

B. s. ‘Arctic Emerald’ – An extremely cold hardy boxwood with an upright growth habit. New growth emerges light green and matures into dark, glossy green. Grows 6-8 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide in full sun to part shade. Zone 4-9

B. 'Glencoe' Chicagoland Green  
Excellent cold hardiness.  Prefers protection from winter winds. Tolerates pruning and shearing well, often used as a small hedge or topiary. Grows to 3-4' with a 5' spread. Zone 4-9.

B. ‘Franklin’s Gem’   The hardiest of all boxwoods. A dwarf, grows 2’ tall and to 3’ wide. Nice round shape. Zone 4-9

B. ‘Green Gem’  Known for it’s round shape, this boxwood only grows 18-24” tall and wide. Glossy dark green leaves hold their color year round. Excellent winter hardiness. Zone 4-9

B. ‘Green Mound’  Dark green foliage, dense symmetrical crown, similar to ‘Chicagoland Green’. Great attributes due to self-maintained habit and modest growth combined with excellent color. Grows 3’ x 3’. Zone 5-7.

B. ‘Green Velvet’   A compact grower, retains a broad mounded shape. Grows 2-4’ tall and wide. Glossy dark green leaves hold color year round. Excellent resistance to bronzing. Zone 5-8.

Growth habit is nice and compact and foliage is very dense. Color is most pronounced in full sun, but will accept part shade. Grows 3 ft. tall and wide. Zone (5)6-9.

Dark green oval-shaped leaves with compact growth habit, to 2' high, makes this variety excellent for a small hedge. Takes sun to part shade. Zone 5. 

B. sempervirens 'North Star'  A Proven Winners selection.  Forms a dense globe that requires little, if any, pruning. Shiny, dark green leaves retain their color through winter.

The distinctive appearance makes this shrub great for topiary, hedges, and formal gardens. Grows 2-3' with a 4-5' spread. Zone 5-9.

B. s. ‘Variegata’
 Variegation is out­standing, elegant plant, neat creamy white borders on every leaf. Compact uniform habit even without shearing but can get large, even­tually could mature at 8’ if left untouched. Works well in shady situations.

B. sinica var. insularis 'Wintergreen'  This variety is known to hold its green color throughout the winter with a less likely chance of turning bronze. Insignificant flowers but very fragrant. Typically grown to be between 2-4' but height can be controlled by pruning. Zone 4-9.

CHAMAECYPARIS (False Cypress) 

C.o. ‘Crippsii’ – features feathery golden yellow foliage that holds well in winter. An upright grower, it quickly reaches 8-10 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. Plant in full to part sun. Zone 4-8

C. obtusa 'Fernspray Gold'  Dense pyramidal form of 'Fernspray' with bright yellow foliage. Can mature slowly at 6' tall with a spread of 4'. Part shade works best. Zone 4.

Likes shearing to make a compact landscape form. Prefers a moist, well-drained soil and moderately humid atmosphere in a sunny, wind protected area. A good planter item and useful in Oriental garden settings. Five year size is 3' x 4' in a pyramidal shape. Mature height is 12' with a 12' base spread. Zone 5-8.

C. o. 'Gracilis'   Upright and graceful pyramidal habit dressed in dark green. Foliage grows with a curling habit creating a unique texture. A fine specimen or staggered hedge. 5 year size is 5' x 3'. Mature size is 12' x 5'. Zone 4-8.

C. o. ‘Kosteri’  Attractive shrub has a rounded form maturing into a pyramidal shape. Displays flat sprays of green foliage. Excellent for rock gardens or mixed borders. Slow grower to a mature 4-5 ft and wide. Zone 4-8.



C. o. 'Nana Gracilis' (Dwarf Hinoki False Cypress)  Makes a small pyramidal tree with thick dark green foliage. A slow-grower with a formal appearance for rock gardens or landscape feature. Five year size is 1.5' x 1.5'. Mature size is 6' x 6'. Likes full sun. Hardy. Zone 4-8.


C. o. ‘Templehof’   A compact grower that grows to 8’ tall and spreads 4’ wide. Deep green foliage that overlaps for a unique look. Makes an attractive informal hedge. Zone 4-8.

C. pisifera ‘Baby Blue’  A very attractive variety with intense silvery blue colored foliage that has a feathery look to it. Foliage turns a slight purplish plum in winter. Has an overall upright, somewhat conical growth habit and keeps a very nice, tidy shape with little or no trimming at all. Slow growth rate of 3-5” per year. Mature height of 4-6 ft. Mature width 4 ft. Zone 4-8. Full sun to part shade with part shade preferred.

A graceful, pleasing mound to add contrasting color and texture. Use for foundation, small gardens, rock garden and as a specimen. Likes full sun. Five year size is 2' x 2.5'. Mature size is 3.5' x 4'. Zone 4-8.

C. p. ‘Lemon Thread’   A slow growing, semi-dwarf, broadly-conical, shrubby variety that will typically grow 3-5’ over the first 20 years but may eventually reach 10-12 feet tall.  It is noted for its bright yellow thread-like foliage.  Looks great in the winter landscape also.  Can handle full sun but part shade may be preferred where it is hot so that it does not scorch.  Drought tolerant.  Zone 4-8.

The leaves are bright green on top and flecked with silver-blue on the underside. A great substitute for Dwarf Alberta Spruce. A sport of Boulevard. Full sun to partial shade. Protect from harsh winter sun and winds. A slow growing, compact selection that requires little pruning. Grows 6-10’ with time. Hardy to Zone 5.  Prefers moist, well drained, lime free soils.



I. c. ‘Steeds’ – an evergreen shrub with an upright, pyramidal growth habit. It features dark green foliage and black berries. Highly adaptable and low maintenance. Plant in full sun. Zone 5-9

ILEX (Holly) 

ILEX x meserveae  (Blue Holly) 


I. x meservae ‘Blue Prince’  A broad shrub with dark green foliage that can be easily pruned. One of the hardiest of the blue hollies. Part to full sun. Male, use as a pollinator. Grows to 12’ tall and spreads to 8’. Zone 4-9


I. x m. ‘Blue Princess’   Exactly like the ‘Blue Prince’ but will need the male pollinator for berries. Grows 12’ tall and to 8’ wide. Zone 4-9



I. x m. ‘Blue Prince/Princess’  A combination of both cultivars for self pollination.

I. c. ‘Steeds’ – an evergreen shrub with an upright, pyramidal growth habit. It features dark green foliage and black berries. Highly adaptable and low maintenance. Plant in full sun. Zone 5-9

 J. c. ‘Spartan’  Narrow pyramidal or columnar tree with attractive dark green foliage all year around. Grows between 15-20’ tall and spreads only 4-5’. Zone 4-9

J. c. 'Torulosa' (Hollywood Juniper)  Su­perb rich green foliage, quite smooth to the touch, retains vivid color all year. Upright growth habit to 10-20' with a spread of 6-8'. Slightly twisted branches have an artistic appearance. Full sun grows 8-16" per year. A particularly handsome upright juniper! Zone 5-8. 



J. communis ‘Gold Cone’  This dwarf evergreen makes a strong vertical statement in the landscape with its canary-yellow tipped foliage.  Grows 3-5’ tall and only 2-3’ wide.  Full sun for best color.  Zone 5-7.

I x m. ‘China Dynasty’ – this holly is the self-pollinating combination of both ‘China Boy’ and ‘China Girl’. Features shiny green leaves and red berries. Grows 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. Plant in full sun. Zone 5-7
I x m. China Girl® - A mounding shrub of green foliage and with a male pollinator, will burst into red berries in the fall. Excellent heat tolerance. Grows 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. Plant in full to part sun. Zone 4-9

PICEA (Spruce)

P. orientalis (Oriental Spruce)  Broadly columnar tree, conical when young. Very short, blunt, 4-sided, dark green leaves are arranged radially on the shoots. Could eventually grow up to 100' tall and only 20-25' wide, but is slow growing. Nice looking evergreen from the Cancasus in North­east Turkey.

P. o. ‘Aureospicata’   Mature dark foliage contrasts with bright yellow emerging foliage. Forms a broad pyramid with arching lower branches.  Grows to 60’ tall and spreads to 30’. Zone 4-8

P. p. glauca ‘Bakeri’  A narrow and pyramidal growth habit with striking blue foliage that is consistent. Excellent choice for an accent planting. Grows 40’ tall and spreads 20’ wide. Zone 3-7


P. p. glauca ‘Baby Blue’  Pyramidal form with excellent and consistent blue color that intensifies with age. Grows 12-15’ tall and spreads 8-12’.  Zone 3-7

P. p. g. 'Globosa' (Dwarf Globe Blue Spruce) Flat topped, densely branched globe shaped shrub 3' high and wider. Dense, bright blue needles hold their color throughout the year. Valuable as an accent plant or specimen. Height depends on a low graft or a stand graft. Zone 3-7.

PINUS  (Pine)

P. strobus  Eastern White Pine  A fast growing native tree with long, soft needles. Good choice for large properties. Grows 60-80’ tall and spreads 30-35’ wide with a pyramidal growth habit. Likes full sun and average soil. Zone 3-7





T. cuspidata ‘Bright Gold’  Slow grow­ing with a spreading habit. Much brighter gold color than T. buccata ‘Aurea’. Grows 2-3’ tall by 3-4’ wide. Zone 4-9. 




T. c. ‘Capitata’  A pyramidal form with dark green foliage. Grows 10-25’ tall and spreads 5-10’ wide. Can be pruned to shape. Zone 4-7



T. c. ‘Emerald Spreader’   Known for its low-growing, dense, spreading habit. Dark green needles retain good green color in winter. Good choice for use as a hedge. Grows 12-30” tall and can spread anywhere between 1-9’. Zone 4-7

THUJA (Arborvitae)

T. o.  ‘Fire Chief’  Bright mutation of the Rheingold variety, much brighter foliage in the spring and deeper, more red color. Less prone to splitting. Grows to a mature 4’ tall and wide. Zone 3-7. The growth habit is rounded, almost perfect ball.

TSUGA (Hemlock)

T. c. 'Jeddeloh'  A dwarf, bird's nest-like selection with feathery, arching tips and a slightly depressed center. A very reliable and desirable clone Excellent for smaller landscapes. Thrives in moist well drained soils. Benefits from protection from winter wind and sun. Grows 12-30". Part shade best. Zone 3.
