ATHYRIUM (Lady Fern)

The fronds are 3-4" wide arching and dropping, crested fronds and tips. Grows to height of 24-48" tall. Hardy Zone 4-8.

Found in 1857 in Ireland, it has narrow fronds 12-18" long with pinnae reduced to beadlike balls. New to most gardens! Zone 4-8.


Athyrium ‘Godzilla’
This Japanese Painted Fern is a giant growing to 3 feet tall and spreading 4-6 feet. The fronds are silvery with green highlights growing on dark purple stems. Rabbit resistant. Part to full shade. Zones 3-8

A. n. "Pictum Regal Red' Fronds are a burgundy red in the center contrasting with its silvery green edges. Grows anywhere between 8”-20" in height. Zone 4-9.

The young fronds of this cultivar are lustrous and orange. Even the fronds at maturity though green, hold their orange color and retain the glossy sheen. The growth habit is identical to the Autumn fern but dramatically more showy. Evergreen. Grows 18-24" tall. Zone 5-8.

D. x australis (Dixie Wood Fern)  This hybrid is found in wild populations from Louisiana to Virginia, but is a superb garden plant as far north as Zone 5. It is taller than either parent and a formidable addition to the garden. Grows to 5' tall Zone 5-9.

D. complexa (Robust Male Fern)  This large hybrid fern is one of the best-known of the wood ferns. Male fern occurs in cool, moist, rocky woods in western and northeastern North America, in Europe and also in Asia. Very handsome in woodland setting where it has room to show off, but it is also quite sun-tolerant when soil is moist.  Grows 24-48”, deciduous, clumping. Zone 4-8.

D. pseudo-felix-mas ‘Mexican Male Fern’ A native fern from Mexico. Upright clump of green fronds. Prefers rich, moist soil. Full to partial shade. 23-39” by 31-39”. Zones 5-9


M. struthiopteris (Ostrich Fern) – deciduous fern with large fronds that resemble ostrich plumes. This woodland beauty typically grows 3-6 feet tall and 5-8 feet wide in full to part shade. Zone 3-7


O. regalis var. spectabilis (American Royal Fern) 
 One of the most handsome ferns. Foliage is deep forest green with long smooth edged leaves. Enjoys moist, acidic shady sites. Whether used in borders or as a background, the Royal Fern enhances any garden with its gracefulness and varying shades of green. Easy to grow almost anyplace, even full sun when given sufficient wa­ter. A dormant period improves vigor. Grows 12-­36”. Evergreen, short-spreading. Zone 5-8.


P. acrostichoides (Christmas Fern) 
 Easily grown evergreen fern for shade or partial shade. 18-24".
