ADIANTUM
A. pedatum (Northern Maidenhair) . Very delicate, fan-shaped fronds. Stems are shiny and black, with light green lacy leaves, turning bright gold in fall. Will slowly spread to form a medium-size round clump. Popular variety. Deciduous. Grows 12"-24" tall and wide. Zone 3-9.
ATHYRIUM
A. filix - femina (Lady Fern) . Lacy-looking fronds are bright green. Clumps are dense and mounded. An easy variety for any shady corner. Great for massing. Deciduous. Zone 3-9.
A. filix-femina 'Victoriae' (Queen of Green)
The fronds are 3" to 4" wide arching and dropping, crested fronds and tips. Grows to height of 24" to 48" tall. Hardy Zone 4-8.
A. t. filix - femina 'Frizelliae' (Tatting Fern) . A deciduous lady fern from Europe and is one of the most unique ferns available today. Found in 1857 in Ireland, it has narrow fronds 12"-18" long with pinnae reduced to beadlike balls. New to most gardens! Zone 4-8.
A. filix-femina ‘Lady in Lace’ . Looking much like prehistoric parsley, this fun and fantastic Fern is easier than it looks. Not finicky about much, this is truly a classy lady. Easy in
the garden and a great fluffy filler in shady pots Grows 12” tall and wide in shade. Zone 4-9.
A. niponicum 'Pictum' (Japanese Painted Fern) . Very distinct form. Feathery fronds are 2' 3' long. Easy to grow. Hardy Zone 4-8.
A. niponicum ‘Pictum-Applecourt™ (Applecourt™ Crested Japanese Painted Fern) . This variety has all of the wonderful, colorful frond characteristics of Japanese Painted Fern, but with added heavy cresting of each frond to create fuller, delicate appearance. Grows 12”-24”. Deciduous, spreading. Zone 4-8.
A. Niponicum var. pictum’Burgundy Lace’. Bar none, the best red Japanese Painted Fern. Gorgeous metallic burgundy leaves (brightest in the spring), which are also well-silvered Great vigor in containers as well as in the garden Grows 15”-24” tall by 18”-28” wide. Plant in part shade to shade. This plant likes humidity, so keep evenly moist. Drought can force plants into dormancy. Zone 4-9.
A. x ‘Oceans Fury’ (Crested Painted Fern). This hybrid has an upright habit, with leaves that are crested and lightly silvered. A wonderful addition to lighten up your shady areas or in the woodland garden. It prefers fertile moist soils. Grows up to 36” tall by 24” wide Zone 5-9.
CYRTOMIUM
Cyrtomium fortunei 'Fortunes'. An excellent holly fern that will tolerate colder weather better than other Japanese holly fern. An easy, fast grower with a tall erect habit of 18"-30". Evergreen to semi-ever green clump. Zone 5-10.
DRYOPTERIS
Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance'. Brilliance is a new colorful and more brilliant form of the Autumn fern. The young fronds of this cultivar are lustrous and orange. Even the fronds at maturity though green, hold their orange color and retain the glossy sheen. The growth habit is identical to the Autumn fern but dramatically more showy. Ever green. Grows 18"-24" tall. Zone 5-8.
D. x australis (Dixie Wood Fern). This hybrid is found in wild populations from Louisiana to Virginia, but is a superb garden plant as far north a Zone 5. It is taller than either parent and a formidable addition to the garden. Grows to 5'-5' tall Zone 5-9.
D. complexa (Robust Male Fern). This large hybrid fern is one of the best-known of the wood ferns. Male fern occurs in cool, moist, rocky woods in western and northeastern North America in Europe and also in Asia. Very handsome in woodland setting where it has room to show off, but it is also quite sun-tolerant when soil is moist Grows 24”-48”, deciduous, clumping. Zone 4-8.
MATTEUCCIA
M. struthiopteris 'The King' (Jumb Ostrich Fern). Grows 36"-84", deciduous wide spreading variety. Huge plume-like fronds form this ancient strain. Ostrich Fern will add beauty and depth to landscape plantings in northern zones. Fronds are 50% larger than the native variety. Zone 2-6.
OSMUNDA
O. cinnamomea (Cinnamon Fern). Called Cinnamon Fern because of the erect rusty brown fronds that appear in the spring. Likes acid soils with constant moisture. Deciduous, up to 5'.
O. regalis var. spectabilis (American Royal Fern). One of the most handsome ferns. Foliage is deep forest green with long smooth edged leaves. Enjoys moist, acidic shady sites. Whether used in borders or as a background, the Royal Fern enhances any garden with its gracefulness and varying shades of green. Easy to grow almost anyplace, even full sun when given sufficient water. A dormant period improves vigor. Grows 12”36”. Evergreen, short-spreading. Zone 5-8.
POLYSTICHUM
P. acrostichoides (Christmas). Easily grown evergreen fern for shade or partial shade. 18"24".
