ACORUS
(Sweet Flag)


A. gramineus 'Oborozuki'.
Foliage is a hand­some golden yellow-striped. This variety makes a great groundcover or even a container plant. Pre­fers constantly moist soil and will grow well in shallow water. Grow in full sun to light shade. Grows 10" tall. Hardy Zone 4-11.


 
ANDROPOGON(Little Bluestem).

A. scoparius. 
Used often in plantings because it is short and mixes well with wildflowers. Leaf color ranges a variety of blue and green hues. These turn a striking bright red in fall and are topped by fluffy silvery white seed stalks. Grows best on medium and dry soils 2'-3'. Zone 3-8.

 

ARUNDO ah-RUN-doh. Zone 6-10. Zone 4-8.


A. donax ‘Peppermint Stick’.
Green and white variegated foliage that retains its vivid color in the heat. Grows 12’ tall.


A. donax 'Variegata'
(Var. Giant Reed). Var­iegated halfway through the growing season then turns green. 9'-10' tall white plumes.

CALAMAGROSTIS kal-ah-mah-GORS-tis. Zone 5-9.


C. achnatherum 'Brachytricha'
(Diamond Grass) (Korean Feather Reed Grass). This me­dium green clump form is a rather tidy plant that grows 2' tall and wide. In September, dozens of 3' tall refined looking pink plumes top the clump. The pink color gives way to a bronze tone that stays till winter. Very impressive in mass plantings. Will tolerate hot summers much better than C.a.'Overdam'. An awesome accent plant ­one of the Best! Zone 5-9. Sun, part shade. (It may take considerable shade.)


C. arundinacea 'Karl Foerster'.
Showy, feather plumes with striking, erect, wheat-col­ored seedheads. 5' tall.


C.x acutiflora ‘Avalanche’. (Varie­gated Feather Reed Grass).
In midsummer, silvery-tan plumes appear over an impressive vertical grass that boasts a wide, white band down the center of each blade.


C. x a. ‘Eldorado’.
Upright form like ‘Karl Foerster’ with central gold variegation on the leaf blades. Grows to 4’. Zone 5-10.



CAREX
CAR-ex. Zone 5-9.


C. ciliato-marginata ‘Treasure Island).
Bright white edge foliage with wide green cen­ter. A wonderful addition to the lightly shaded garden. Excellent also as a long-lived container plant. Grows 9”-12” tall. Zone 5-8.


C. glauca ‘Blue Zinger’.
An excellent groundcover. Steel-blue clumps of foliage create a sea of blue when planted in drifts. Grows to 12”. Zone 4-9.


C. oshimensis 'Evergold'
(Aurea-Variegata). Prominent creamy gold stripe, leaves quarter-inch wide. Grows in average to rich soil, protect from drying winter winds. Grows 8"-10". Zone 5­
-8.



CHASMANTHIUM
kas-MAN-thee-um. Zone 5-9.


C. latifolium
(Northern Sea Oats). 3' grass with attractive seed heads that are wonderful dried for winter arrangements. Nice in group plantings.


C. l. ‘River Mist’.
An exciting introduc­tion that offers striking green and white varie­gated foliage. Brings a vivid look to any garden, and this unique grass makes a great specimen plant. Grows 2’-3’ tall. Zone 5-9.



ERIANTHUS
air-ee-AN-thus (Hardy Pampas).


E. ravennae.  Tall stately silvery white plumes 9'-12' tall. Lovely autumn color.



FARGESIA
(Clump Bamboo). Zone 4-9.

FESTUCA

F. glauca 'Boulder Blue' . Season long mounds of metallic blue. Just a hint more blue than 'Elijah Blue'. Grows 8" tall. Zone 4-8.



HAKONECHLOA


H. macra 'Aureola'.
Variegated leaves are yellow with narrow green margins. Cascading habit in which the leaves arch in the same direction like a golden waterfall. Slowly spreads by stolons. Not invasive. Needs some shade in the afternoon. Grows 12"-24". Zone 5b-9.

(Rush)


J. effusus ‘Big Twister’
(Corkscrew Rush). Bold, upright spirals create a unique modern look. A
WOW! plant that can also be used in containers. Grows 18”-24”. Zone 5-11.



MISCANTHUS
mis-KAN-thus (Maiden Grass). Zone 4-9.


M. sinensis 'Adagio'
. A superb dwarf maiden grass. Flowers emerge pink, becoming white. A superior performer. Thin silver gray foliage to 2'. Flower spikes to 4'. A Kurt Bluemel selection. Zone 6-9.


M. s. 'Autumn Light'.
One of the hardiest, vigorous, with creamy plumes in late summer. 6'­8'.


M. s. 'Dixieland'.
A dwarf form of M.s. 'Variegatus'. Similar variegated foliage but shorter and more compact. Does not need staking. Showy, silky pink plumes. Grows 4'-5' tall.


M. s. 'Ferner Oster' (Far East).
A compact strong grower. Dark foliage with bright silver mid­rib. Beautiful deep wine inflorescence starting late July into August, eventually turning cream. Grows 4'-5'.


M.s. ‘Gold Breeze’.
This vigorous grow­ing Miscanthus has many of the same character­istics of ‘Gold Bar’ with a taller mature heigh and more banding. Grows 5’-7’. Zone 5-9.


M. s. 'Goliath'
. Grows 8'-9', massive foliage pink flowers. Blooms in September. Zone 5-9.


M. s ‘Gold Bar’.
This slow-growing vari­ety is the most heavily gold-striped to date. Its tight upright spiked habit is perfect for landscape and containers. Grows 3’-5’. Zone 5-9.


M. s. gracillimus
(Maiden Grass). Upright arching stalks with feathery, fan-shaped pale pink
panicles. 5'-7' tall.


M. s. var. condensatus ‘Cabaret’.
Very wide, ribbon-like foliage with a creamy-white cen­ter and dark-green margins. Useful as a specimen grass, a garden accent, in mass plantings and even as a container plant. Grow 5’-7’ tall. Zone 5-8.


M. s. var. condensatus ‘Cosmopolitan’
Nearly identical in character to ‘Cabaret’, but has an exact reverse variegation. Foliage has a deep-green center and wide, creamy-white margins Grows 6’-8’ tall. Zone 5-8.


M. s. 'Graziella'.
Early opening large plumes over fine foliage. One of the finest Miscanthus for northern climates. 5'-6'.


M. s. 'Huron Sunrise'.
A first rate selection from Canada. Hardy to Zone 4. Foliage is a me­dium width with a natural silver midrib-line. The outstanding characteristic is the very full burgundy flowers making an early show in mid-August Great for northern climates. Clump forming. Good winter interest. Holds leaves during the winter Most profuse blooming of any Miscanthus. Grows 5'-6'.


M. s. ‘Kascade’.
An earlier blooming Miscanthus variety. Narrow bladed and upright, its pink-tinted plumes rise high above in foliage in midsummer. Very choice grass. Grows 6’-7’. Zone 5-9.


M. s. 'Little Zebra' (Dwarf Zebra Grass)
Like M.s. 'zebrinus' but shorter and more upright Keeps its color all season. Reddish-purple plumes are produced reliably. Grows 3'-4' tall. Zone 5-9.


M. s. 'Malepartus'.
Very hardy variety. Large purple-pink plumes open early then change shortly after to silver. Green foliage, becoming bronze in fall. 5'-6'.


M. s. 'Morning Light'.
Quite fine blades with distinct variegation of green and white stripes. 5'­7' tall.


M. s. 'Nippon'.
Compact variety with fine-textured leaves, best for small gardens. Fall color is bronzy-red. 2'-3'.


M. s. 'Rigoletto'
. A new dwarf variegated maiden grass from the famed Bluemel Nursery This variety is about one-third shorter than M.s 'Variegatus'. Foliage is slightly narrower and great creamy white variegation. Perfect for smaller gardens, grows 3' tall. Zone 5-9. Blooms Septem­ber to October. Fantastic Pick!


M. s. 'Sarabande'.
'Sarabande' has very narrow foliage that is among the finest of all the Miscanthus varieties. Similar in appearance to 'Gracillimus', but of slightly smaller stature. It produces golden-copper colored seed plumes in August. Likes full sun and well-draining soil. Grows 5'-6' tall. Zone 5­-10.

M. s. Silberspinne.  A graceful plant with narrow leaves and silvery flowers.  Excellent variety for the smaller garden.  Grows 4'-5' tall.  Zone 5-9.

M. s. Silberfeder.
  Silvery white plumes that bloon early and last all winter. One of the best suibstitutes for a Northern Pampas Grass.  6'-7' tall.

M. s. Stardust
. Petite with narrow green leaves and horizontal variegatiion.  Burgandy plumes in late summer.  Grows 1'-3' tall. Zone 5-9.

M. s. Strictus.(
Porcupine Grass). Horizontal golden bandingon bright green leaves.  Stiff upright clumps, very similar to Zebra Grass except mor erect.  Unique specimen plant.  5'-6' tall.

M. s. Super Stripe.  This grass from Blooms of Bressingham has thick gold band on wide leaves.  The small clumping mound is an outstanding specimum for the front of the border.  Grows 4' tall with flowers reaching 7'. Zone 5-9.

M. s. Yaku Jima.  A dwarf maiden grass from Japan.  Foliage is narrow, silvery green color with a fine texture.  Silver plumes in early fall/late summer.  3'-4' tall. 

M. s. Zebrinus.   Horizontal bands of yellow-gold.  Will grow as wide as it is tall.  5'-7' tall.


Panicum(Switch Grass). 

P. v. Prarie Fire. 
The red color of this panicum is much improved from the older panicums. Foliage will turn from blue-green to wine -red in early summer.  The panicles are a rosy color.  Grows 4'-5' tall.  Zones 4-9.

coloring becomes more pronounced until it turns deep burgundy-wine by September. Valued for its tight clumping habit, airy nature, and the hazy flower and seed heads that form late in the sea­son. Grows 4’ tall. Zone 4-10.

P. v. Cloud Nine  One of the taller of the switch grasses.  Blue-green glaucous leaves and an upright habit.  Turns an attractive dark golden color in autumn.  8"tall.

P. v. Dallas Blues.  One of the best wide-leaved, blue Panicums.  Grows 6'-8' tall.  A blue switch grass with soft, pastel-pink seed heads.  Wonderful in mass or groups.  Great contrast color.  Works in sun to paart shade.  Very hardy!

P. v. Ruby Ribbons.  Soft green foliage emerges in the spring on upright, clumping plants.  The foliage takes on a wine red color in early summer.  Grows 4' tall.  Zones 4-10.

P. v. Shenandoah.  Best burgandy-red coloring of all the switch grasses.  Deepgreenfoliage takes on red hues by midsummer.  The coloring becomes more pronounced until it turns deep burgandy-wine by September.  Valued for its tight clumping habit, airy nature, and the hazy flower and seed heads that form late in the season.  Grows 4' tall.  Zone 4-10.


PENNISETUM pen-ih-SEE-tum (Fountain Grass). Zone 5-9.


P. alopecuroides ‘Red Head’.
(Red Head Fountain Grass). Deep purple buds mature to smoky purple plumes that measure 3” wide and 8”-10” long. The green foliage turns golden in the fall. Grows 3’-4’ tall. Zone 5-9.


P. a. 'Hamelin'
(Dwarf Fountain grass). 24". More compact smaller version of the species.


P. a. ‘Piglit’.
This 2007 introduction is half the size of ‘Hamlen’, showier than ‘Little Bunny’. It has a clumping habit 18” tall by 24” wide. Works well in mass plantings or inter-planted with other perennials. Grows in full sun to light shade; moist, well-drained soil. Hardy Zone 5.


P. orientale 'Karley Rose'.
Introduced by Sunny Border Nurseries. Deep green blades erupt into intense smoky rose-purple flowers. Long blooming from May to frost. Grows to 36". Zone 5-9.



PHALARIS
fah-LAR-is. Zone 4-9.


P. arundinacea 'Picta'
(Ribbon Grass). An old garden favorite. A white variegated spreading grass effective as a ground cover and bank cover. 2'-3' tall.



SCHIZACHYRIUM


S. scoparium ‘Prairie Blues’.
(Little Bluestem). An improvement over the species. Brighter grey-blue foliage and red-orange fall color. Fluffy, silvery heads. Narrow, upright habit. Grows in hot, dry areas where other plants cannot survive. Grows to 3’. Zone 3-9.



SORGHASTRUM
sor-GAS-trum (Indian Grass). Zone 4-9.


S. nutans 'Indian Steel'.
A warm-season, clump­ing grass with striking metallic blue. A very useful grass as a specimen or for naturalizing. Upright blooms appear in August. Grows to 4' in full sun. Hardy to Zone 4.

S. pectinata 'Aureomarginata'
(Cord Grass). Golden-edged prairie cord grass has leaves with a thin golden margin. Is an aggressive spreader that grows 3'-6' tall.
