Perennial of the year 2013

Polygonatum o. 'Variegatum'

Variegated Solomon's Seal

Here at Alwerdt's, this plant has great use for dry, shaded areas. It generally grows to a height between 2 and 3 feet tall with 8-12 inch spread. A very tough plant, insects and diseases will leave it alone! Prefers part to full shade. Beautiful green leaves with a margin of white on arching stems that produce small, bell-shaped, fragrant, white flowers in spring. In autumn, blue-black berries appear and the foliage turns a golden yellow.  It looks fantastic in the woodland garden or naturalized setting, especially when paired with other shade plants such as ferns, heucheras, and astilbes.  For additional information on the Perennial Plant Associations perennial of the year, click on the link below!
