Welcome to Alwerdt’s Gardens website! We are a unique, Destination Garden Center located in a beautiful rural setting on 38 acres just south of Altamont, Illinois.
We established our Gardens in 1988 and have evolved over the years to be one of the largest suppliers of new and unique plants material available for Midwestern gardening enthusiasts. We have over 5 acres of well-laid out sales areas in which to shop for your gardening and landscape needs.
We have an experienced, very knowledgeable, courteous and helpful staff. Our team is always ready to help you with your decisions and can assist when you are shopping.
One of our main attractions is our 4-plus acres of Botanical Display Gardens. They include trees and shrubs, perennial beds, shade gardens, vine arbors, water gardens, ornamental grasses, rock gardens, and Fine Art Sculpture. We are also an “All American Selections” display garden for AAS annuals. These beds border our parking area, so they are easily available for public viewing. We are truly “A Place to Learn” about gardening.
We are a botanical treasure house that carries well over 1,500 varieties of perennials, trees, and shrubs. We grow to finish all our own plants (exception trees and shrubs) in order to offer the best in plant material for your needs. As a “Certified Proven Winner Garden Center”, you can also expect the best in annuals and container plants. We design and grow all our own fantastic hanging baskets! Shop early (before Mother’s Day) for the best choices.
We publish in newspaper format an extensive and informative Plant Reference Guide that lists all the plants that we grow and sell retail (this guide is presently not available online.) This guide is available in the Sales Shop for you to keep and use for reference as you tour the Gardens and sales areas. If you would like a copy sent to you, please contact us and we will happily mail a copy to you.
We have a lot to look at. Our Botanical Display Gardens change with the seasons, so feel free to visit often to view the seasonal changes and to develop ideas.
We are easy to find, located one mile south of Interstate 70, Exit 82 at Altamont, Illinois, then one-eighth mile on E. 800 Avenue.
