ABIES (Fir)


A. intermedia (Canaan Fir).
Similar to Fraser Fir but can withstand hotter temperatures and wet ground. Grows to 75' and 12'-15' wide. Zone 4-7.

 


CEDRUS
- CEDAR


C. atlantica ‘Glauca’ Blue Atlas Ce­dar.
Is one of the true cedars. Over time grows to 40’-60’. Growing habit is loose pyramidal when young. It makes a nice specimen tree for large lawns. Best grown in deep, well-drained acidic loams in full sun. Drought tolerant once established. Tolerant of hot and humid summers. Best planted in a protected location as is only hardy Zone 6­
-9.


C. atlantia ‘Glauca Pendula’ Serpen­tine.
A trained Blue Atlas Cedar. Does not like wet soils and needs to be protected from wind. Makes a great specimen plant. Zone 6-9.

 


CHAMAECYPARIS
(False Cypress)


C. nootkatensis ‘Pendula’ (Weeping Nootka False Cypress)
. Interesting evergreen tree with horizonal branching and weeping foli­age. Grows to 10’ in 10 years. Mature size is 30’. Zone 4b.


C. o. 'Fernspray Gold'.
Dense pyramidal form of 'Fernspray' with bright yellow foliage. Can mature slowly at 6' tall with a spread of 4'. Part shade works best. Zone 4.


C. o. 'Filicoides' (Fernspray Cypress)
. Very interesting compact specimen with short fern­like foliage. Likes shearing to make a compact landscape form. Prefers a moist, well-drained soil and moderately humid atmosphere in a sunny, wind protected area. A good planter item and useful in Oriental garden settings. Five year size is 3' x4' in a pyramidal shape. Mature height is 12' with a 12' base spread. Zone 5-8.


C. o. 'Gracilis' (Fernspray Cypress).
Upright and graceful pyramidal habit dressed in dark green. Foliage grows with a curling habit creating a unique texture. A fine specimen or staggered hedge. 5 year size 5' x 3'. Mature size 12' x 5'. Zone 4-8.


C. o. 'Nana Gracilis'
(Dwarf Hinoki False Cypress). Makes a small pyramidal tree with thick dark green foliage. A slow-grower with a formal appearance for rock gardens or landscape feature. Five year size is 1.5' x 1.5'. Mature size is 6' x 6'. Likes full sun. Hardy. Zone 4-8.


C. o. 'Torulosa'
(Twisted Hineki Cyrpess). Unusually attractive shrub, red barked, contorted, thread-like intertwining twisted branches hold­ing scale-like green foliage. Slow grower to 9' high, 9' wide. Grows 1"-3" per year. Zone 4-8.


C. pisifera 'Boulevard'
(Boulevard False Cy­press). Noted for its silvery blue green foliage in summer that becomes greyish blue in winter. Forms a narrow pyramidal evergreen up to 10' in height, spread of 6'. Grows in full sun to part shade. Growth rate of 6"-12" per year. With­stands pruning. Zone 4-8.


C. pisifera 'Golden Pin Cushion'.
Golden dwarf moss cypress. Very slow growing. Best color in full sun. Mature size is 2'-3' x 2'-3'. Zone 4.


C. pisifera ‘Soft Serve’.
Proven Winner Color Choice. A compact, conical variety with graceful, soft fernlike branching. The leaves are bright green on top and flecked with silver-blue on the underside. A great substitute for Dwarf Alberta Spruce. A sport of Boulevard. Full sun to partial shade. Protect from harsh winter sun and winds. A slow growing, compact selection that requires little pruning. Grows 6’-10’ with time. Hardy Zone 5. Prefers moist, well drained, lime free soils.

C. p. 'Filifera Aurea', Golden Thread Leaf False cypress. Striking yellow, soft, feathery foli­age. Slow growing plant forming a mounded shape when young. Lovely accent plant. Plant in full to part sun in moist, well drained, loamy soil. Mature size 6'-9' by 6'-9' wide. Can be trimmed. Hardy Zone 4-8.


C. p. filifera 'Golden Mop'
(False Cypress). We have found this to be the most golden of the dwarf threadleaf cypress. Holds the gold all year. A graceful, pleasing mound to add contrasting color and texture. Use for foundation, small gardens, rock garden and as a specimen. Likes full sun. Five year size is 2' x 2.5'. Mature size is 3.5' x 4'. Zone 4-8.

 



ILEX
(Holly)


I. opaca 'Merry Christmas'.
An American Holly that has lustrous dark green small to me­dium-sized spined leaves on a fast growing, densely foliaged and branched tree, lustrous bright red fruits. Grows 45'-50'. Spread to 15'. Zone 5-9.

I. x attenuata ‘Fosters Holly’. Most cold hardy. Habit is conical-pyramidal.
Good in group­ings, against walls in narrow planting areas where other hollies would grow too wide. Can grow 20’ tall. Can be sheared to keep in size. Zone 5b-9.

ILEX x meserveae - Blue Holly


I. x Castle Spire.
A beautiful new compact, pyramidal blue holly with large lustrous dark green leaves, bright red berries and superior branching. A great foundation plant, specimen or hedge plant that can be used instead of upright yew. Use Castle Wall as the pollinator. Grows to a mature 8'-10' with a spread of 3'-4'. Zone 5.


I. x Castle Wall.
A new broad-columnar shaped, male blue holly with lustrous dark green leaves and superior, compact branching. A great foundation plant, specimen or hedge plant that can be used like Hicks Yew. Grows a mature 5'-8' with 2'-3' spread. Zone 5.


I.x m. ‘Honey Maid’.
An evergreen var­iegated holly. Foliage is variegated blue green with creamy margins. Best grown in full sun. Can be sheared to shape; if left unchecked can grow up to 15’ tall by 5’ wide. Zone 4-9.


I. x 'Royal Family'.
A self-pollinating combi­nation of Blue Prince and Princess.

 

ILEX crenata (Japanese Holly)


I.c. 'Drops of Gold'.
This Japanese Holly offers a strking foliage color of bright gold, where it is exposed to the sun. A vigorous grower tha makes a wonderful hedge or foundation plant. 5 year size 3' x 4'. Mature 6' x 8'. Zone 5b-8.


I. c. 'Sky Pencil'.
Extremely slender and up­right, this holly can be used to make a formal or vertical statement in any setting. Perfect for smaller gardens. Deep green foliage remains all winter Five year size is 8' tall by 2'. Mature is 10' tall. Zone 5-7.

 



JUNIPERUS-
JUNIPER


J. chinensis 'Blue Point'.
Upright ever­green with blue-green foliage. It requires little shearing due to its natural pyramidal habit. Grows to 10' tall and 4' wide. Zone 4.


J. c. 'Keteleeri'.
Fresh green foliage, medium size, broad-based pyramidal shape. Fast grower Mature height of 15'-20' with a spread of 6'. Zone 3-9.


J. c. 'Pfitzeriana Aurea Gold Lace'. (Gold Lace Juniper).
A hardy semi dwarf evergreen with a low horizontal, widespreading, gracefu form. Retains its striking golden-colored foliage Grows 2' tall by 3' wide. Full sun best. Hardy to Zone 3.


J. c. 'Torulosa' (Hollywood Juniper)
. Su­perb rich green foliage, quite smooth to the touch retains vivid color all year. Upright growth habi to 10'-20' with a spread of 6'-8'. Slightly twisted branches have an artistic appearance. Full sun grows 8"-16" per year. A particularly handsome upright juniper! Zone 5-8.


J. c. 'Hibernica' (Columnar Irish Juniper)
Bluish to green foliage. Very narrow form. Grows 6'-10' with only a spread of 18'-20'. Zone 2-6.


J. squamata 'Blue Star'.
2' tall by 4' spread Forms a mounded shape of steel blue foliage. Can be used as a ground cover or in mass plantings Full sun to part shade. Zone 4-8.


J. virginiana 'Blue Arrow'
(Blue Arrow Juni­per). An evergreen with steel-blue foliage grows into a very narrow columnar form with tight compact branching. Requires little trimming Grows maximum 10' with a spread of 2', full to part sun and well drained soil. Hardy to Zone 3


J. v. 'Canaerti'.
Dark green, upright, bright blue berries. Mature height 20' with a spread of 8'. Zone 2-9.

 



MICROBIOTA
- Siberian Cypress


M. decussata.
A dwarf, densely branched ever­green with low spreading form and foliage that resembles Arborvitae. Bright green summer color turning bronze in winter. Grows in both full sun and full shade. Hardy to -40º F. Grows 12" tall and spreads 3'-4'. Zone 2-6.

 



PICEA
-SPRUCE


P. abies (Norway Spruce).
A stately tree, with a pyramidal shape when young and pendulous branches as it matures. The largest and fastest growing of the spruces. Mature size is 40'-50' spread 25'-30'. Zone 2-7.


P. abies ‘Little Gem’.
A dwarf form of Norway Spruce. Needles are very small with dark green color. Plant only grows about 1”-2” a year The form is a round bun. Plant found in Holland around 1965 by Grootendorst Nursery in Boskoop Full sun. Zone 3.


P. a. 'Pendula'. (Weeping Norway
Spruce). Specimen Norway Spruce that is usually staked into weeping form. Zone 3.

P. a. 'Repens'. (Spreading Norway Spruce).
Very dwarf, broad growth habit forming a dense, uniformly round shrub. Grows 18" tall by up to 5' wide. Usually trimmed to shape. Zone 3.


P. glauca ‘Haal’ Alberta Blue Dwarf Alberta Spruce.
Reliable silvery blue color does not revert to green; small scale perfect for contain­ers and city gardens. Zone 2-8.


P. glauca var. albertiana 'Conica' (Alberta Spruce).
Interesting, dwarf evergreen of pyrmidal form with grass-green foliage. Very hardy and requires NO trimming. Mature size of 10' x 4'. Zone 3.


P. omorika (Serbian Spruce).
Narrow, spire-like tree with pendant branches ascending at the tips. Flattened, dark to blue-green leaves. Upright narrow growing to a mature 70' with only a spread of 6'-10'. Zone 5-8.


P. Orientalis (Oriental Spruce).
Broadly columnar tree, conical when young. Very short, blunt, 4-sided, dark green leaves are arranged radially on the shoots. Could eventually grow up to 100' tall and only 20'-25' wide, but is slow growing. Nice looking evergreen from the Cancasus in North­east Turkey.


P. pungens ' Fat Albert'.
Grows to maximum height of 15' and spread of 8'-10'. A truly Blue Spruce, this grafted variety is slow-growing and ideal for situations where you would like a Spruce that isn't huge at maturity. Fat Albert has a natu­rally straight leader and well-shaped form, even as a young tree and requires no staking or train­ing. Zone 2-7.


P. p. glauca "Colorado Select Blue' (Colorado Select Blue Spruce).
Eye catching, silvery blue foliage makes a striking accent to the landscape. Broad pyramidal habit to 25'-50' tall and up to 15' wide. Zone 2.


P. pungens 'Globosa'
(Dwarf Globe Blue Spruce). Flat topped, densely branched globe shaped shrub 3' high and wider. Dense, bright blue needles hold their color throughout the year. Valuable as an accent plant or specimen. Height depends on a low graft or a stand graft. Zone 3-7.


P. p. g. 'Hoopsii'
(Hoopsi Blue Spruce). Per­haps the bluest Blue Spruce. Clear, silvery blue foliage. Dense pyramidal form that grows to 33'­50' and spreads 13'-20'. Plant in sun to part shade in moist, rich soil Hardy to Zone 2.

 



PINUS
- Pine


P. heldreichii var. leucodermis (Bosnian Pine).
Medium-sized, pyramid ever­green. Black-green, brush like needles, smooth gray-green bark and bright blue cones. Drought and salt tolerant. Grows 40’ tall and 10’ wide. Zone 5b-8.


P. mugo 'Enci'.
A dwarf Mugo Pine that has a dense, compact growth habit. Mature 3' with a spread of 5'. Zone 2.

 


PSEUDOTSUGA
(Fir)


P. menziesii (Douglas Fir).
Wide, upright. Graceful soft green foliage. Prefers moisture reten­tive soils but is quite adaptable. Ideal as a specimen, in groups, or as a scrum. Makes a fine Christmas tree. Grows 40'-80'; 12'-20' wide. Zone 4-6.

 


TAXUS
-YEW


T. 'Sentinalis'.
A narrow plant that adds archi­tectural interest to the landscape. Perfect for tight spots and for directing attention. One of the faster growing columnar varieties. Grows 8' tall by 2'wide. Zone 4.

T. cuspidata ‘Bright Gold’. Slow grow­ing with a spreading habit. Much brighter gold color than T. buccata ‘Aurea’. Grows 2’-3’ tall by 3’-4’ wide. Zone 4-9.

T. x media 'Densiformis' (Dense Spreading Yew). Dark green foliage except during the spring blush when new growth is emerald green. High shade tolerance. Requires good soil drainage. Grows 3' high by 6'-7' wide. Takes shearing well. Excellent hedge or foundation plant. Zone 4-7.

T. x media 'Hicksii' (Hick's Yew). Long, upright branches form narrow columnar habit. Can grow 10'-12' tall and 3'-4' wide, but can be sheared. Handsome glossy dark green foliage. Must have well drained soil. Zone 4-7.


T. x media 'Margarita' PW Colorchoice.
A cool lime green evergreen with a fresh, healthy color. A great landscape plant that is adaptable and easy to grow. Grows 4'-5'. Sun to shade. Zone 4.



THUJA-
ARBORVITAE


T. occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire'.
An excellent variety for small spaces. This slow growing, nar­row upright features dark green, dense, fine tex­tured foliage. Grows 10'-15' tall by 2'-3' wide. Zone 4.


T. o. 'Filiformis' (Threadleaf Arborvitae Standard Form).
Unique rare variety grown on a standard. Has pendant, whip-like shoots. May need staking for a couple of years until it is established. Grow in deep, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Zone 4-7.


T. o. 'Hetz Midget'.
Dense globe-shaped form. Requires no shearing to maintain globe form. Very slow grower to a mature height of 3'-4'. Grows sun to part shade. Zone 3-8.


T. o. 'Holmstrup'.
Compact, slow growing pyramidal form with tight, bright green foliage. Reaches height of 4'-5' and a spread of 2'. Good for low hedges. Does well in light shade, tolerates poor drainage. A new, hardy upright evergreen for the landscape. Zone 3-8.


T. occidentalis 'Rheingold'.
A slow growing broadly globose evergreen, distinguished by its rich orange-yellow soft foliage. Winter color is coppery-orange, providing vibrant contrast in the landscape. Grows 4' tall by 5' wide. Zone 4.


T. o. 'Smaragd' Emerald Arborvitae.
Grows to 10'-15'. From Denmark. Emerald green foli­age. Compact pyramidal form. Holds color well through the winter. Zone 4-8.


T. x 'Gigantioides' ('Green Giant'). Green Giant Western Arborvitae.
One of the finest evergreens for screening and specimen use, this uniformly conical tree performs well in a variety of settings. Disease free and strong-rooted. Takes shearing very well. Grows quickly to 25'-30' tall and 10'-12 wide. Zone 4-8.

 



TSUGA
-HEMLOCK


T. canadensis 'Canadian Hemlock'.
30'-45'. Native to the U.S. Long lived tree that does well in city conditions. Pyramidal growth, branches  often droop. Can be easily sheared into a hedge Zone 4-7.


T. c. 'Jeddeloh'.
A dwarf, bird's nest-like selection with feathery, arching tips and a slightly depressed center. A very reliable and desirable clone Excellent for smaller landscapes. Thrives in moist well drained soils. Benefits from protection from winter wind and sun. Grows 12"-30". Part shade best. Zone 3.
