PERENNIALS
Achillea m. ‘Saucy Seduction’. The seduction series of Yarrow have a compact, sturdy and robust habit. ‘Saucy‘, has flowers that open and intense fuchsia pink, lightening to medium pink. New flowers are produced all summer providing an array of color over an extended time. Grows 18”-24” tall. Zones 5-9 hardy.
Agastache x ‘Ava’. A vigorous variety with tall spikes of lightly fragrant tubular rose-pink flowers that starting mid to late summer and continue for 2 to 3 months attracting hummingbirds. Grows 2’-4’ tall. Zones 5-9.
Alcea rosea hybrids- Spotlight Series. These hollyhocks are a stable, straight color with single flowers. These plants are truly perennial, not biennial and they bloom the first year.

A. x ‘Sunshine’. Bright yellow color.
Aster ericoides ‘First Snow’. (Heath Aster). A different looking form of Aster with finely textured foliage that forms a woody, arching and prostrate mound. Dense sprays of tiny white flowers blanket the foliage late in the season. Mildew resistant and drought tolerant. Grows 18”- 24” tall. Zones 3-9.
Astilbe ‘Radius’. An impressive selection that forms a large and robust clump similar to chinensis types but with more refined, green foliage that has a reddish copper cast in spring. Burgundy buds open to bright red triangular flower plumes on burgundy scapes. Grow 20”-26” tall. Zones 4-10.
Baptisia ‘Midnight’. (Midnight Prarieblues False Indigo). Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden. This variety has unsurpassed longevity with a bold vase-shaped habit and two intermingling bloom cycles. Primary deep blue-violet inflorescences emerge in June and are held high along the perennial border as shorter secondary branches lengthen the bloom period upwards of a month. Grows to 4’ tall. Zones 4-9.
Belamcanda chinensis ‘Freckle Face’. A profusion of 2 inch wide showy orange blossoms with heavy red speckling and shading are produced atop a clump of green, sword-like foliage. Grows 18”-24” tall. Zones 4-10.
Calyophus serrulatus ‘Prarie Lode’. Attractive orange buds beckon vibrant yellow, four-petal flowers spring through summer. Narrow, lance-shaped foliage creates a compact habit. A no fuss groundcover perfectly suited for the rock garden, edging or dry border. Grows 6”-12” tall. Zones 4-7.
Coreopsis ‘Cosmic Eye’. A short, compact selection. Two to three inch fluffy semi-double to double canary yellow flowers, are produced over a very long period. Healthy green foliage is coarse, like the grandiflora types. Another variety from the ‘Big Bang’ Series. Grows to 12” tall. Zones 5-9
Dianthus ‘Dragon Fruit’. This colorful double selection produces fragrant, bright pink ruffled flowers with magenta markings around the center and edge of the petals. Large 1.5’ flowers top the mound of grey-green, grassy foliage. Demonstrates good heat and humidity tolerance. Grows 8” tall. Zones 4-9.
Dianthus barbatus ‘Heart Attack’. (Perennial Sweet William). Very deep crimson red flowers are presented in rounded clusters above the glossy, dark green lance-shaped leaves. Foliage is deep red when it emerges in spring. Grows to 24” tall. Zones 4-9.
Dicentra ‘ Burning Hearts’. (Fern-leaved Bleeding Heart). Absolutely fantastic!!! Striking rose-red, heart shaped flowers with a white edge are produced all season atop a compact mound of lovely blue-gray , finely textured foliage. Does not go summer dormant if given adequate moisture. Grows 10”-12” tall. Zones 3-9.
Echinacea ‘Amazing Dream’. A dream for the garden. Has a dense habit, amazing number of blooms, and a long blooming searson. Flowers are deep pink to 2.75 inches in size. Grows 16” tall and 20” wide with flowers to 24” high. Zone 4-9.
Echinacea ‘Daydream’. A midsize plant with fabulous yellow to soft yellow flowers. Blooms all summer long with a sweet fragrance. Foliage to 22” and 15” wide. Flowers reach up to 26” tall.
Echinacea ‘Magnus Superior’. A new and improved selection. Deeper lavender pink blossoms, darker stem color, larger coppery orange cones, and a more consistent growth habit. Grows up to 40”. Zone 3-8
Echinacea ‘Mama Mia’. Very large red orange flowers. Flower color changes from red to orange to coral to pink. A designer color with a nice big habit and a long bloom time. Foliage to 20” tall and spread to 30”. Flower height to 26”. Zone 4-9
Echinacea ‘Secret Desire’. A mid-size plant with double ‘Coral Reef’ type flowers. This selection has very large multicolored flowers of pink and orange. Grows vigorously and forms a full plant quickly. Foliage to 19” tall and spread or 36”. Flowers to 26” tall. Zone 4
Echinacea ‘Secret Lust’. It has double flowers with red orange cones and contrasting light carrot colored rays. Blooms all summer long! Has well-branched compact habit. Foliage to 25” tall and 36” wide. Flowers to 31” tall. Zone4-9.
Echinacea ‘Secret Passion’. Has bright flamingo pink double cones and contrasting lighter pink ray florets. Blooms all summer and fall. Well branched, compact habit. Foliage 18” tall and 36” wide. Flowers up to 27”. Zone 4-9.
Geranium ‘Double Jewel’. From the species pratense (Meadow Cranesbill), with large, finely cut leaves and large saucer-shaped flowers. ‘Double Jewel’ has unique double white flowers with a rich purple heart. Foliage is an intense dark green. This is a dwarf G. pretense. Grows 17” tall. Blooms June/July. Zone 5-8.
Geum ‘Fire Storm’. An improved ‘Fireball’. Twice the flower power and vigor, with half the plant size. This compact long blooming double orange flowering plant is easy to grow in almost any garden. Grows 13” tall and 18” wide. Flower s to 20” tall. Zone 5-9
Geum ‘Mai Tai’. Burgundy purple calyxes open to reveal ruffled, semi-double to single, apricot flowers with a rose blush on purple stems just above the compact clumps of foliage. Exhibits hybrid vigor; longer lived. Grows 16-18”. Zone 5-7.
Helenium ‘Red Army’. Anice dwarf Helenium with bright red flowers with yellow highlights that vary from flower to flower. Blooms begin during mid-summer and continue into September. Attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Grows 24-28” and spreads to 16-18”. Zone 4-9
Hemerocallis ‘Congo Coral’. From the Double Trouble collection. Flower size 5”. Grows to 24” tall. Repeat blooms June to August.
Hemerocallis ‘Double Royal Red’. Another from the Double Trouble collection selected for double blooms and incredible performance. Flowers 5”. Grows to 28”. Repeat blooms June to August.
Hemerocallis ‘Going Bananas’. An improved ‘Happy Returns’ with larger flowers and nearly continuous bloom right into early fall. Lemon yellow flowers open just above the foliage, typically 10-15 per scapes. Grows 19-22” tall. Flowers to 4”.
Hemerocallis ‘Yellow Submarine’. From the Double Trouble collection. Large double yellow flowers to 6.5”. Grows to 24” tall.
Heucherella ‘Yellowstone Falls’. A trailing Heucherella that has lovely chartreuse lobed leaves with deep crimson markings. The stems will trail three feet in a container making a wonderful hanging basket or a super ground cover. Grows tall and spreads to 24”. Zone 4-9
Hosta ‘Avocado’. A sport of Guacomole’ with a much wider green margin. Leaves are 10” long by 8” wide; medium gold center; 2” wide, green margin. Fast growing to 24” high and up to 50” wide. Has flowers of fragrant, pale lavender flowers in August on three-foot scapes.
Hosta ‘Celebrity’. A Lachman classic offering sharply contrasting variegation and a large mound size. Leaves 10” long by 7” wide, medium to dark green with a ¼” to ¾” wide gold margin. Moderate corrugation with good substance. Pale lavender flowers from mid-June into July on 24-30” scapes. Grows 26”x56”.
Hosta ‘Centerfold’. Intensely corrugated unruly gold foliage, good substance. Leaves are 10” long by 7 ¾” wide, bright gold. Flowers are very pale lavender from late June to July. Grows 21” high by 47” wide.
Hosta ‘Cleopatra’. Attractive, margined variegation. Leaves are 10” long by 6 ½” wide; 1” wide margin changes from yellow to white; medium green center; better than average substance. Pale lavender flowers open from late July into August on 39” scapes. Mound size 18’ high by 50” wide. Dense habit.
Hosta ‘Dawn’s Early Light’. May be the best piecrust-edged, gold-leaved cultivar ever introduced. Leaves are 10” long by 8” wide. Color bright yellow in spring, medium gold by early June; blade broadly ovate-shaped, intensely corrugated and heavily rippled; good substance. Lavender flowers on 30” scapes in July. Grows 19” high by 47” wide.
Hosta ‘Enterprise’. Leaves are 8” long by 6” wide; creamy white center with a green margin; better than average substance. Lavender flowers in July7. Grows to a mound size of 20” high by 45” wide. Excellent mound of white-centered foliage.
Hosta ‘Gentle Giant’ Giant size 42” high by 65” wide. Upright habit; blue-green color; unruly; corrugated, cupped, and twisted with good substance. Lavender flowers from mid-June into July on 4 foot scapes.
Hosta ‘Indigo’. Intensely blue foliage; slug resistant; hybrid of ‘Halcyon’. Leaves 7” long by 4” wide; lance-shaped intensely blue; good substance. Near white flowers on foot high scapes in early August. Grows into a mound 12” high by 25” wide.
Hosta ‘Ivory Coast’. A spectacular, large-sized specimen plant; slug resistant. Leaves 11” long by 9” wide with wide creamy white margins; bluish to dark green center; smooth texture; very thick substance. Grows to a mound 26” high by 60” wide. Lavender flowers in July on 48” scapes.
Hosta ‘Katie Q’. Medium-sized mound 18” high by 45” wide of green-centered, gold edged foliage. Outstanding for vivid foliage colors and good growth rate. Pale lavender flowers in July on 18-3” scapes.
Hosta ‘Orion’s Belt’. Sharp contrast between leaf and margin and center gives this medium-sized plant a striking appearance. Leaves 8” long by 5” wide; shiny, dark green center; ½” wide, creamy white margin. Grows 18” high by 42” wide. Lavender flowers on three-foot scapes in July.
Hosta ‘Pathfinder’ Outstanding sport of ‘Francee’. Leaves 6” long by 4 ¾” wide; dark green margin; white center with many green speckles; thick substance. Grows 16” high by 36” wide. Lavender flowers from late July into August.
Hosta ‘Praying Hands’. 2011 HOSTA OF THE YEAR. Popular, unusual cultivar with extremely cupped, very wavy, white margined foliage; great in the garden, but outstanding as a container plant which emphasizes its upright mound habit and narrow wavy foliage. Leaves 7” long by 2” wide. Grows into a mound 16” high by 30” wide. Has narrow funnel-shaped, lavender flowers from late July into August on 30” scapes.
Hosta ‘Sara’s Sensation’. A sport of ‘Frances Williams’ with leaves 12” long by 10” wide; blue-green in the center with a 3 ½” wide, gold margin; heavily corrugated; thick substance. Grows 22” high by 50” wide. Has near-white flowers from mid-June into early July.
Hosta ‘Wylde Green Cream’. Leaves 5” long by 4” wide; ¼” wide, dark green margin surrounding a bright gold center. Outstanding contrast between margin and center of leaf. Grows 12” high by 30” wide. Lavender flowers open on 18” scapes in July.
Leptinella squalida ‘Platts Black’. (Brass Buttons) A charming plant where low groundcovers are needed, such as stepping stones. Takes light foot traffic and leaves get even darker with greater sun exposure. Has delicate fern-like foliage. Small yellow button flowers in late spring. Prefers moist, rich, loamy soils. Grows 2-4” tall and spreads 10-12”. Zone 5-9. Sun to partial sun exposure.
Lillium ‘Rosy Dimples’ A dwarf compact oriental lily that has soft pink flowers with white, star-shaped centers. Glossy, dark green foliage.
Monarda didyma ‘Purple Rooster’. Has large, true royal purple flowers and excellent mildew resistance. Grows to 3 feet. Zone 4-9.
Phlox p. ‘Cosmopolitan’. Dwarf phlox is a standout in the landscape, with 1.5” hot pink flowers with fire red eyes over dark green foliage. Grows to 15” tall. Zone 4-8.
Phlox p. ‘Jeana’. Outstanding mildew resistance with varying shades of sweetly scented, lavender pink flowers, vibrant mid-summer through early autumn. Grows 2-4 ft. Zone 3-8.
Phlox p. ‘Sherbet Blend’. The first phlox with yellow in its flowers. Yellow-green buds emerge out of chocolate-maroon bracts, opening into green/yellow edged flowers with soft pink or white centers.
Primula pubescens ‘Exhibition Series – mixed’. The most carefree and pest resistant type of primula. Mixed strain with a broad array of blue, purple, red-violet, yellow, and cream flowers with a prominent yellow or white eye. Fragrant, rounded flower clusters stand above a flat rosette of unusually smooth, leathery, paddle-shaped leaves. Grows 6-8”. Zone 4-8.
Sedum ‘Carl’. Compact habit and large clusters of brilliant magenta pink flowers held on reddish stems. Forms a dense, upright clump of grey-green, slightly serrated foliage.
Sedum spurium ‘Summer Glory’. (Two-row Stonecrop) Low maintenance, evergreen groundcover with a dense spreading habit. Serrated, deep green leaves develop reddish tints in cool weather. Bright carmine pink flowers are produced for many weeks.
Solidago shortii ‘Solar Cascade’. Delightful, golden-yellow flowers are borne in auxiliary clusters along reflexing stems from late summer into fall. Not an aggressive runner, but a clump forming perennial. Works best in moist to average garden soil. Extremely drought tolerant once established. For a dramatic affect plant en masse. Grows 24-30”. Zone 3-8
Stachys minima. The most floriferous stachys. Pink-purple flowers bloom on 4-6” spikes in June and July. Forms a dense mound of dark, glossy green foliage. Small in size but huge in flowers. Well-drained soil. Grows 3-6”, spread 15-18”. Zone 4-8.
Veronica ‘Hocus Pocus’. Everything you could possibly want in a veronica. Has incredibly showy flowers, uniform habit, clean foliage, and branched flowers which extend the bloom time. Very long, vivid violet-purple flower wands top the short, green foliage. Grows 16-20”. Zone 4-8.
Ornamental Grasses
Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Burgundy Bunny’. Clumps of fine leaves are predominately green with red accents in summer, topped with creamy white bunny-tail flowers. Red foliage percentage increases until the entire plant is ablaze in autumn. Grows to 18”. Zone 6 (5)-9.
Perennial Vines
Campsis radicans ‘Madame Rosy’. A well mannered, deciduous vine; blooms spring through fall, displaying clusters of large, intense rose colored flowers. This trumpet vine is a hybrid between our native and campsis grandiflora. Flowers exhibit a somewhat flattened trumpet shape, 2-3” across. Vine produces no seed pods, which means the flowering period is extended. Vines reach 10-15 ft. in 4-5 yrs. Zone 5-9
Lonicera x brownii ‘Bailelle’ ‘Honeybelle’ Honeysuckle. Easy to grow vine. Its first flush of flowers are like a waterfall of golden blossoms and the repeat is extraordinarily consistent. This compact twining vine will bloom well into fall and produces some red berries. Grows 10-20 ft. Zone 3-8.
Roses
Rosa Easy Elegance ‘Super Hero’. A floribunda that has gorgeous, medium red, hybrid tea shaped blooms all season long. Clusters of perfect, red blossoms stand out strongly against clean, medium to dark green, sating foliage. A disease-resistant shrub. Grows 3-5 ft. Zone 4-9.
Rosa Easy Elegance ‘Sweet Fragrance’. A grandiflora. Hybrid tea-shaped buds in tropical tints of coral and orange with a deep yellow base swirl open to full, sweetly fragrant, apricot blossoms. Clusters of buds and blooms are held on sturdy canes making them perfect for cutting. A vigorous, upright grower with excellent disease resistance. Grows 2-4 ft. Zone 5-9.
Rosa Easy Elegance ‘Yellow Brick Road’ Neat, round, compact shrub covers itself with clusters of old-fashioned, lemon-yellow blossoms. Excellent black spot resistance on this shrub rose that grows 2-3 ft. Zone 5-9.
Rosa ‘Pink Home Run’. Vivid, rich pink flowers. Just like ‘Home Run’, it is early to flower and produces fresh flowers every day. Home run is noted for disease resistance and heat tolerance. Grows 3-4 ft. Zone 4-9.
Trees and Shrubs
Acer palmatum ‘Pixie’ Pixie Dwarf Japanese Maple. Dwarf variety with deep red palmate leaves which hold the red-maroon color all summer, becoming more striking in fall. Grows only 4-5 ft. tall and spread of 3-5 ft. Zone 5-7.
Acer palmatum ‘Shaina’. Unusual dwarf, bushy tufted habit and spectacular foliage! Leaves are dark red all summer and intensify in fall, turning brilliant shades of crimson-red. Grows 4-6 ft. tall and wide. Zone 5-7.
Acer tataricum ‘Hotwings’. An alkaline soil tolerant alternative to the popular ‘Amur’ maple. Habit is graceful, upright, and spreading. Little yellow flowers are followed by bright red samaras, hence the name ‘Hotwings’. Dark green foliage turns yellow to red giving the fall color expected of a maple. Grows 20-30 ft. with a spread of 15-20 ft. Zone 3a-6b.
Azalea Encore ‘Sundance’. Dark pink blooms and foliage color provide an ever-changing color palate for your garden. Grows 3.5 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide. Zone 6-9
Buxus microphylla ‘Peergold’. (Golden Dream) This extremely handsome plant has good green foliage that is edged in golden yellow. Growth habit is nice and compact and foliage is very dense. Color is most pronounced in full sun, but will accept part shade. Grows 3 ft. tall and wide. Zone (5)6-9.
Chamaecyparis p. ‘Baby Blue’. A very attractive variety with intense silvery blue colored foliage that has a feathery look to it. Foliage turns a slight purplish plum in winter. Has an overall upright, somewhat conical growth habit and keeps a very nice, tidy shape with little or no trimming at all. Slow growth rate of 3-5” per year. Mature height of 4-6 ft. Mature width 4 ft. Zone 4-8. Full sun to part shade with part shade preferred.
Diervilla ‘Cool Splash’. (Bush Honeysuckle) Clusters of yellow trumpets top the striking variegated foliage, that holds even in the shade. This densely branched deciduous shrub forms underground suckers and is tolerant of inhospitable soil types. Fragrant flowers attract butterflies. Grows 3-4 ft. tall and wide. Zone 4-7.
Duetzia gracilis ‘Spring Sensation’. Will fill your garden with garlands of white blooms from the ground to the very tips of each gracefully arching stem. Suitable for most soil types. A carefree shrub. Grows 3-4 ft. tall and 4-5 ft. wide. Zone 5-9.
Hydrangea arborescens ‘Endless Summer Bella Anna’. This new intro has the incredible ability to bloom on new wood, with beautiful magenta-pink blooms that are constant from summer all the way through fall. Also has strong stems to hold up the flowers. Grows 3 ft. tall and wide. Zone 3-9.
Hydrangea arb. ‘Invincible Spirit’. Produces loads of hot pink flowers from early summer to frost. A Proven Winner selection. Grows 3-4 ft. tall and 4-5 ft. wide. Zone 3-7.
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Great Star’. From the renowned French garden of Princess Sturdza. The flowers open to large white, wavy star-shaped florets that can be up to 4” in width. Flowers from mid-summer to frost. A low maintenance shrub that makes a great backdrop in a sun or part shade garden. Grows 6-7 ft. tall and 7-8 ft. wide. Zone 4-8.
Hydrangea pan. ‘Little Lime’. This hardy, dwarf variety fits easily into smaller landscapes. Green summer flowers appear on new wood and turn pink and burgundy in fall. Soil pH does not affect bloom color. Grows 3-5 ft. tall and 4-6 ft. wide at maturity. Zone 3-7.
Lagerstroemia ‘Diamond Dazzle’. A stunning dwarf compact mounded shrub. Profusion of pure white flowers with dark green lustrous foliage that bloom from summer into fall. Mildew resistant and drought tolerant once established. Grows 3-5 ft. tall and wide. Zone 6-9. Maintain protective mulch for wintering.
Lagerstroemia ‘Strawberry Dazzle’. Dwarf compact habit. Beautiful neon-rose blooms. Mildew resistant, can grow 4-5 ft. tall and wide. Zone 6-9. Likes a well-drained, semi-moist site. Maintain winter mulch.
Lagerstroemia ‘Pink Velour’. Handsome specimen plant with large inflorescences in summer. Brownish red exfoliating bark. Wine colored new growth changes to dark green. Bright pink flowers and high mildew resistance. If planted in a protected site, can grow up to 12 ft. tall and 8 ft. wide. Zone 6-9. Cold hardy to -5 to -8 degrees F. If top is killed by cold, re-growth is vigorous. Maintain a good winter mulch.
Malus transitoria ‘Royal Raindrops’. One of the prettiest red-leafed crabapples. Has a better summer color and appearance than most red-leaf crabapples. Abundant magenta-pink blossoms stand out handsomely against reddish-purple, cut leaf foliage. Shows good resistance to fire blight. Fruit is red, ¼” and persistent. Grows 20 ft. tall and 15 ft. wide. Zone 4-7.
Prunus serrulata ‘Extrazam’. (Weeping Extraordinaire Kwanzan Cherry) Large, double pink blossoms in spring and copper-red new growth. A beautiful weeping form with burgundy fall color that lasts longer than most cherries. Grows 15-20 ft. tall and wide. Zone 5-7.
Quince Double Take ‘Scarlet Storm’. Puts on a spectacular early spring display of large red double flowers. Looks almost like Camellia flowers. Double Take series of quince are thornless and deer resistant, they do not produce fruit, and are drought tolerant once established. May be pruned after flowering. Grows 3-4 ft. tall. Zone 5-8.
Quince Double Take ‘Orange Storm’ Puts on a spectacular early spring display of large double flowers with intense orange color. Grows 3-4 ft. tall. Zone 5-8.
Quince Double Take ‘Pink Storm’. Intense pink, early spring flowers are very large and doubled. Drought tolerant. Good for cut flowers. Thornless and deer resistant and does not produce fruit. Grows 3-4 ft. tall. Zone 5-8.
Syringa reticulata ‘Snowdance’. (Japanese Tree Lilac) Flowers well annually and begins flowering at an earlier age than the species. Selected because of its exceptionally heavy bloom. Large, fragrant panicles of creamy white blooms in June. A sterile variety that is pest and disease free. Grows 18 ft. tall and 20 ft. wide in a vase shape. Zone 3-7.
Viburnum trilobum ‘Redwing’. A Chicagoland Grows intro. Selected for it’s densely branched, upright form; good growth rate; and attractive red-tinted new foliage. This native shrub produces handsome white flowers in mid to late May, followed by bright red fruit that persists through early winter. Foliage in fall is brilliant red. Matures 8-10 ft. in height with a 6-8 ft. spread. Zone 2-7.
Weigela florida ‘Tango’. Has a compact bushy habit with standout purple foliage. The flowers are a beautiful red with a yellow throat and contrast nicely with the foliage. Full sun. Grows 2-2.5 ft. tall and 2.5-3 ft spread. Zones 4-8. |
